Bogota is filled with a lot of art from museums, street art (murals, graffiti), outdoor concerts and at times street performances. On our second day in Bogota my brother and I were with our local friends in La Calendaria (the historic part of Bogota). As you walk the streets of this neighborhood you find a variety of paintings on the wall. The murals cover restaurants, open spaces and local shops.
After a lunch with friends we decided to check out some of the art, architecture and the local neighborhood and we ran into a street performance about to commence. A dance group of mostly Afro-Colombians, warm and beautiful, and dressed in vibrant colors filled a portion of the street. It was mostly couple dances reminiscent of Salsa but it seemed the dancers had their own version. Bogota and Colombia in general has a number traditional dances the popular ones usually originating amongst the African population in Colombia.
With beautiful dance comes beautiful music. Within the Afro culture wherever in the world it’s found everything has to be vibrant. The music of the dance in like fashion was also vibrant, the dancers vibrant and warm. We watched for a few minutes what seemed to us as an impromptu performance. It was beautiful sight to see and one of the many artistic expressions one can expect to find in Colombia.
